Learning Outcomes and Application This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to prepare and operate an extraction station in sugar cane operation. The unit applies to individuals who work under supervision in the sugar milling industry and who are competent to operate turbines and reciprocating engines where required.All work must be carried out to comply with workplace procedures according to state/territory health and safety regulations, legislation and standards that apply to the workplace.No occupational licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Element: Prepare the extraction process for operation

  • Confirm services are available and ready for operation
  • Check equipment in readiness for use according to operating specifications
  • Select, fit and use personal protective equipment as required
  • Set the extraction process to meet production requirements
       
Element: Operate and monitor the extraction process
  • Start and operate the extraction process according to operating procedures
  • Confirm process performance is maintained within specification
  • Ensure bagasse quality meets specifications
  • Monitor equipment to confirm operating condition
  • Identify, rectify or report bagasse, process and equipment non-conformance according to workplace procedures
       
Element: Hand over the extraction station
  • Maintain workplace records according to workplace requirements
  • Carry out shift changeover according to workplace procedures
  • Ensure extraction station operators are aware of system and related equipment status at completion of handover
       
Element: Shut down the extraction system
  • Identify the appropriate shutdown procedure for operational and long-term shutdown conditions
  • Safely shut down the extraction system according to operating specifications and workplace procedures
  • Prepare the extraction system for storage in shutdown mode
  • Identify and report operational maintenance requirements according to workplace procedures

Assessment Tasks
